There's gold in California, and greedy mine owners blast the state's majestic mountains with high-pressure power hoses to unleash the glittery wealth - even if the process may create rampaging floods on local farmlands. A Sweeping historical epic, Gold Is Where You Find It tells this true story of the 1870s through the lens of a romance between a mining engineer (George Brent) and a wealthy landowner's daughter (Olivia de Havilland). Director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) shows a sure hand with spectacle, especially in the climactic scene depicting a massive dam explosion. The spectacle is intensified by the same three-strip Technicolor process that helped make the Adventures of Robin Hood and the Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (both also directed by Curtiz) so memorable.
